About Osteopathy
Osteopathy was originally founded by Andrew Taylor Still in the 1870s in Kirksville Missouri. This form of manual therapy was created by understanding the structures of the human body the anatomy, and the relationship between the body’s functional anatomy and its physiological functions. Classical Osteopathy is a form of manual therapy by which practitioners uses the body’s range of motion to manipulate the patient’s anatomy to restore the 4 rivers of life (nerve, artery, vein and lymphatic). The belief is that our body including these four “rivers” give our body the ability to self-heal and self-regulate.
How does Osteopathy differ from other modalities?
-
Osteopathy is a whole-body approach to manual therapy. We work with all the layers of the body, to realign your structure to its best self to allow the body to self-heal.
-
As the body is one big functioning unit, we do not isolate the structure or layer of tissue we are working on. We encompass the whole body noticing any asymmetries and restriction of motion leading into compensation patterns throughout your body. Removing all these restrictions and asymmetries brings your body back to its best structural self which allows the body to function optimally.
The 4 Principles of Osteopathy
The body is a dynamic unit of function
The body is designed to self-heal and self-regulate
The body is interconnected on all levels
Osteopathic treatment is guided by the understanding of these natural principles
